Charles H has always had a heart for volunteerism. Raised by two phenomenal women, his mother and grandmother, he’s well aware that a man’s helping hand is often exactly what is needed most.

He has been linked to various community service projects through housing provider Homes of Light. Charles was a part of the Gwinnett Reentry Intervention Program from December 2012 to April 2013, and credits his success to the program.

Before entering GRIP, he had been staying in a motel, when an employee at the Gwinnett County Jail told him about the program. “GRIP gives you a good ‘jumping off’ point to start getting your life back on track,” proclaims Charles.

Being a part of GRIP, coupled with the frequent volunteer projects sponsored by Homes of Light, really helped him “put his problems into perspective.”

Charles is now connected to mental health services through the Dekalb County Board of Health and is staying in permanent housing supported by SNHAP (Special Needs Housing Assistance Program). In his free time, Charles enjoys reading and “staying in the word of God”.

He now volunteers at different agencies all over greater Atlanta, including Fragment Ministries, Homes of Light, the SHARE program, and United Way. “I have been given so much in life, I just really want to give some of that back!”
