Haleigh is a senior at the University of Georgia and is pursuing her degree in human development and family science. Her initial internship was last summer when she helped organize fundraising events for VetCar, a division of Homes of Light that finances and sells cars to veterans at affordable rates. When she was told she had to complete and internship to graduate she knew immediately that she wanted to return to Homes of Light. Her experience with fundraising was so positive that it made her want to learn more about the organization and get to know the clients on a more personal level. Along with completing a case study about VetCar Haleigh had to study the day to day duties and processes of the case workers, as well as interact with clients in order to help them create a service plan. A client’s service plan outlines their strengths and weaknesses and what can be done to reach their goal of being self- sufficient. She plans on a career with a non- profit when graduates and feels more confident about her ability to continue to be an advocate for the homeless population. “This internship has really helped be learn the inside workings and showed me how much dedication goes into operating a non-profit,” says Haleigh. “I really feel like I’m more prepared after this experience.”
